Dear Old Boy

Bill Schroder is the stuff of which teaching legends are made. Strict, yet kind and tolerant, he blended a magic mix of care and discipline to bring out the best in his pupils.

A Headmaster's Story

In A Headmaster's Story, Bill shares the story of his life, offering many insights into the challenges and rewards of teaching. He describes how he was a natural leader, and that helping young people realise their potential was his life's calling. Bill also charts how his teaching philosophy developed as he taught at and led a variety of schools, including SACS, Western Province Prep, Rondebosch Boys', Westerford, Rhodes High, Pinelands High in Cape Town and York High in George.

When he was appointed head of Pretoria Boys High in 1990, Bill took on the challenge of leading one of the country's top state schools and soon earned the undying admiration of pupils, parents, staff and Old Boys alike.

'Non scholae sed vitae discimus.
" We learn not for school, but for life."
 Bill taught children for life.'
    - BERNARD KANTOR, co-founder of Investec

At the end of a long and distinguished career, he did not rest on his laurels but went back into the fray, helping to mentor a struggling township high school. Here is a teacher who has left an indelible mark on thousands of pupils, from Cape Town to Pretoria.

PBHS NEWS

Mr McBride's u16C Water Polo team are undefeated in 2019, ending off with a 9-3 victory against Affies in the first term. Well done, Boys.

Pretoria Boys High School won three medals at the ASA Championships held in Paarl at the end of March. To put their achievement into perspective, if Boys High were a province, these three medals would trump the medal tally of four whole provinces. In fact, it would rank us better on the medals table than the entire Eastern Cape!

Here is a blow-by-blow account of these fine athletes' recent achievements.

Tristan Dean is the only Boys High athlete to compete for Gauteng at this year's SA Schools in Port Elizabeth. Here he won a gold medal in the u/19 4x100m Relay and then a week later he won a silver medal at the ASA Championships for the u/20 4x100m Relay after ranking 8th in the country for the hotly contested u/20 100m event.

Jorim Bangue needed to remain in his school record territory for the 110m Hurdles just to make it through to the ASA Championships. He managed to achieve this, and then he won a bronze medal in the u/18 110m Hurdles final, helping Gauteng North to a clean sweep on the podium. His time of 13.83 in that final ranks him 12th in the world so far this year. His times this season have also been good enough to be selected to represent his home country of Cameroon at the CAA African Championships, which is to be held in Ivory Coast in a fortnight.

Matthew Forrester, the team captain, needed to break school records just to qualify for the ASA Championships. But his careful preparation took him well beyond that in the u/20 3000m Steeplechase final where he won a silver medal in a time of 9:12.96. This is a time fast enough to rank him 7th in the world so far this year! Two days after that, he set yet another school record in the u/20 1500m final where he ranked 4th in the country. His stunning kick at the end of that tactical race helped him claim the scalps of some big names.

The total dominance of Gauteng North at these championships is proof of the quality of our schools' athletes and the proverb that iron sharpens iron.

LETTERS

Dear old mates,

I was surprised to read about the passing away of Ted Jones in the newsletter, expecting all our former masters would have left our earth long ago. Reading the tributes I find how little I know about my former master of 5A 1965 - see photo with Head Boy Gordon Hay to the right and me standing behind Gordon.

I read about an obituary in the PBHS online magazine. Its a strange experience you get to know people much closer when you look back on their life on the occasion of their funeral.

I was fond of Capey Jones as our form master and maths teacher, very friendly and humble. I just remember one incident, when he handed out some maths test and addressed me: "Burchard, you could do better, where's your ambition." I admitted, I didn't have any, the result was good enough for me. But somehow he coached me to a distinction in matric exam. Looking back, I feel very grateful for these excellent teachers and personalities.

Regards
Dankwart Burchard, retired GP in Bavaria, Germany

Dear Mr Webber

I thought that I'd drop you a note of thanks from the Old Diocesans Union. We are delighted to hear that Mr Reeler has agreed to lead our school, the Diocesan College.

We have had very kind and supportive messages from members of your Old Boys Association, from the Pretoria Boys community and from Mr Reeler's alma mater. If ever you are in Cape Town, I hope to welcome you to the Mitre, our home on the Bishops campus.

All the best.

THE FOOL AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS

Many things happen in a class during school. Some things one remembers longer than others. Here is one incident that I shall remember.

It was during Science, and our Science Master was giving us the definition of an element: "An element is the smallest particle of matter to exist in a free state." "Why not the Transvaal, sir?" came a voice from the back of the class.

The class, of course, dissolved into laughter and the master looked angry. But when he saw the expression on the boy's face, he calmed down and just asked him to clean the board.

IN MEMORIAM

DONALD FINLAY DICK (1951)

30.04.1934 - 28.02.2019

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the death of Don. He died in his home in Shelley Point on the West Coast after a bravely fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Val and son Robert. Don matriculated in 1951 and then went on to achieve a B Com degree at Tukkies and then a MBA through Unisa.

He was an extremely hard worker and became a very successful businessman. Don's dry wit and incredible sense of humour will be long remembered by those who knew and loved him.

VERNON EDWARD OLIVER (1965)

It is with great sadness I have to inform you that he passed away in October last year from very aggressive bladder cancer.

Vernon always spoke of his school days as though they were yesterday.

A GUY CALLED VERNON
It is with great sadness that we learned belatedly of the passing of Vernon Oliver (1948-2018).
He died in October last year from very aggressive bladder cancer.

He suffered a heart attack in 2014; after his recovery his wish was to travel around southern
Africa, but unfortunately long trips had to be ruled out.

Four years later he was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer; went for chemotherapy and
radiation, but was left much weakened. "The doctors decided to remove the bladder, everyone
was optimistic after the operation, but Vernon passed away at the Urology Hospital in
Pretoria", Karin, his wife of 34 years, told us.

One of a special kind, Vernon was a much loved personality of School House in the early and
mid-sixties. Tributes from his former housemates, in fact, have pointed unequivocally to his
wonderful rapport with all, marvelous sportsmanship and a delight in any company.
Said Charles Marais, a former School House head boy: "Vernon was one of those guys who
made being a boarder really worthwhile and fun, and he'll undoubtedly be sorely missed by
all ". Click here to read more >>

DACRE PUNT (1954)

My name is Mark Thurstain and I'm a friend of Dacre Dacre Punt, a PHBS old boy. It is with great sadness that I have to let you know that Dacre has passed away. After a long illness, that he refused to let constrain his life, he died peacefully in his sleep at the Marie Curie Hospice in London on the 27th October 2018.

With kind regards
Mark
